Research Tips

Searching for books:

At the top of the Brown Library homepage is a search box for a discovery took, which allows you to search for books, articles, and some other materials all at once. An important thing to note is that this discovery tool does NOT include everything that Brown owns. For books, it should fine just about everything that is in Josiah, our original catalog, but you will not have all the functionality of that catalog. For instance, only in Josiah is there a link to RISD's catalog. Please keep this in mind while searching.

Searching for journal articles:

You can search for journal articles in the discovery tool. Please note: This search will not give you results for journals that we have only in print or to which we don't subscribe. For a comprehensive search, please see the individual subject databases listed on this guide and other subject guides.

Searching for manuscript materials:

University Archives in the John Hay Library is the place to go for primary sources. Material must be paged ahead of time and used within the library during its normal hours of operation.

Rhode Island School of Design Library

RISD's collection includes many art and architecture resources that we don't have. Brown students may use the RISD library with their Brown IDs. There is a link to the RISD catalog in Josiah. The library itself is just a few blocks away, straight down College Hill and across the river. RISD Library website.

Providence Public Library

Brown students may obtain Providence Public Library borrowing cards by bringing your Brown ID and proof of residence such as a utility bill sent to your local address. The Rhode Island Room has a large collection of local material, including a card catalog index to older issues of the Providence Journal, and very helpful staff.

Other Libraries

Brown students have access to all other academic libraries within Rhode Island. You may check out books with your Brown ID and may also request books and articles via Interlibrary Loan. In addition, local historical societies are open to anyone interested in Rhode Island history. These are listed on the Outside Resources page.
