Using Special Collections

What are Special Collections?

The University Library holds a large and fascinating collection of unique and historical materials. These materials are housed in the University Special Collections and Archives in the John Hay Library.

How can I find Special Collections?

Many of our Special Collections materials can be found in the Library search box or Josiah.

You can also search for just Special Collections material by doing a keyword search ("travel", for example) in the Collections A-Z page.

How can I access them?

Because they are of unique historical interest (and often quite valuable!), all John Hay Library materials must be requested and viewed within the Special Collections Reading Room.

If you find something in a catalogue search that's in the John Hay's collections, there are some procedures to follow to access it. Have a look at the Using Special Collections page for help.

Local History Subject Guide

In addition to the resources on this page, you may find the Guide for AMST1905 Theory and Practice of Local History useful, particularly for primary sources.
