About Web of Science

Web of Science is provided by Clarivate, and provides broad coverage of STEM and social sciences journals. It indexes article citations, which allows users to calculate a  researcher's h-index. WoS is also closely tied to InCites, which is a different Clarivate product for organizational benchmarking and research analytics, and Journal Citation Reports, which provides the Journal Impact Factor (JIF).

Affiliation Search Text

WoS provides organization unification, so that we can simply search Brown University as an affiliation and also retrieve articles authored by Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown Medical School, Brown School of Engineering, and additional variants.

Note - at this point in time, everything published by Brown University Health is unified under the Brown University affiliation. This means if you search for Brown University as the affiliated organization, it will retrieve publications with the Brown University Health affiliation.

Brown University

OG = (Brown University)

Brown University & Clinical Affiliates

OG = (Brown University OR Lifespan Health Rhode Island OR Miriam Hospital OR Rhode Island Hospital OR Hasbro Children's Hospital OR Women & Infants Hospital Rhode Island OR Care New England OR Butler Hospital Rhode Island OR Providence VA Medical Center)

Searching by Author in WoS

To search by author, use the advanced search interface to combine your list of individuals and the Brown University Affiliation. To get there, click "Advanced Search" from the main search page:

Then, click the "Query Builder" tab:

Select Author from the field drop down list:

Copy and paste the names connected by OR operators into the search field, then click "Add to Query":

Then, click the arrow on the search box, and select "Add to History" (rather than the default search option).

Scroll back up to the query field, then copy/paste the organization search:

OG = (Brown University OR Lifespan Health Rhode Island OR Miriam Hospital OR Rhode Island Hospital OR Hasbro Children's Hospital OR Women & Infants Hospital Rhode Island OR Care New England OR Butler Hospital Rhode Island OR Providence VA Medical Center)

Again, click the arrow next to the Search text, and select "Add to History":

Scroll down until you see "Session Queries." Check the boxes next to each search line, then select "Combine Sets," and choose "And." This will combine the results of each search to retrieve publications authored by the individuals affiliated with the specified organizations.

*There may be instances where you do not want to include an affiliation search, for example, if you want to include publications by an individual before they received an appointment at Brown. But, in general, this can be a useful to disambiguate researchers with the same name and keep your results set specific.
