NVivo

Information on how to download and learn more about using NVivo for qualitative research analysis

Overview

NVivo is qualitative data analysis software that helps researchers organize and analyze unstructured data from various sources, such as interviews, audio, video, emails, and social media. It is a robust tool that can support qualitative and mixed-methods analysis of textual and multimedia material. However, it does not do the analysis for you.

Features:

  • Work with all your data in one place, regardless of type of data.
  • Add information about your data and annotate through coding, memos, and notes.
  • Organize your thoughts about data within your collection of data to aid your analysis. The structure you design for the data is part of your research methodology.
  • Increase ability to work with your data across multiple groupings.
  • Display your data. Before you begin, make sure the software can provide the types of exports that you want, such as visualizations, mind-maps, quantified views of your data.

Contact

For research/ learning / methods help: Please contact our Social Science LIbrarians group at Brown and we would be happy to assist you: socscilibrarians@brown.edu

We can help you evaluate NVivo / qualitative coding for your project, discuss automation features, etc.

For technical and software help: The Office of Information Technology (OIT) manages the NVivo license and software. Contact Software_Services@brown.edu for assistance with software licensing. For technical support, contact help@brown.edu

OIT can help you procure a license, troubleshoot installation issues, etc.

Download

Brown provides access to NVivo to Brown faculty, students, and staff. Use of the software requires VPN or access from on-campus. Brown's CIS software catalog includes macOS and Windows installation information.

Tutorials

Tutorials are available on how to import data, structure data, analyze data, and export your data.

Training from QSR International

Getting started (Mac)

  1. Intro & Import: A general overview of what NVivo does, and how to import data.
  2. Organize: A first look at how to code, note-keeping options, how to create cases (the units of analysis) and give them attributes (descriptive information).
  3. Explore: Run a word frequency query and create a word cloud, then create a simple chart showing opinions on an issue.

NVivo Webinars and Events

Workday Learning Courses

NVivo Essential Training: This Workday Learning Course explores how to leverage NVivo for collecting, organizing, and analyzing non-numerical research data, such as images and text. The course covers key terminology, importing documents, using nodes (containers for NVivo data), coding to organize the data, tools to analyze data, and exporting a summary of your coding structure to Word and Excel for sharing with others.

Workday Learning requires a Brown log in for authentication.

NVivo for Beginners series from BU CARES

A series of six videos that provide an introduction to using NVivo. Created by the BU CARES Research Centre at Brandon University, Manitoba, Canada.

Advance-CTR

Advance-CTR is a statewide hub of research resources and services for clinical and translational investigators in Rhode Island that's located at Brown. They provide consultation services, including NVIVO software training, for RI clinical and medical investigators in the areas of biostatistics, research design, qualitative methods, and biomedical informatics. See their service policies for details. They occasionally provide events and training sessions that are available to a wider audience.
