CHEM0350 Organic Chemistry Lab

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics

Unable to open 'Physical Constants of Organic Compounds' table

You must be on the Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access the CRC Handbook from off-campus.  If you are not on the VPN, then you will be able to open the Handbook, but you cannot actually access any of its contents.

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) software is available from the Brown Software Catalog.  You can either download it to your desktop or run in it your browser.

Structure editor not working

This structure editor is Java-based.  You can download Java for your computer or use one of the computers in either the Rockefeller or Sciences Library.

You may have to enable Java in your browser.  Here are browser-specific instructions for using the CRC Handbook structure editor on either your own or a library computer:

Firefox

1.  On the Structure/Property page search of the CRC Handbook, you will see a box asking you to activate Java deployment.  Click in that box and choose 'Allow now' from the drop-down menu.

2. Once you have clicked 'Draw Structure', a security warning will appear: 'Do you want to run this application?'  Accept risk and run.

3. Once you have drawn the structure in the structure editor and selected 'Add Structure', another warning may appear asking if you want to allow access to following application from this website.  Click 'Allow'.  At this point, the structure may be added to the structure search box.  If not, then close the structure editor, click 'Modify search' link below the structure search box and try to 'Add Structure' again.

Chrome

1. On the Structure/Property page search of the CRC Handbook, you will see a small puzzle piece with an 'x' in front of it in the address bar at the top, indicating that a plug-in is blocked.  Click this icon and choose 'Always allow plug-ins...' option.  If asked to update, click 'Update later'.
