East Asian materials are an integral part of Brown University Library's collections. Over two and a half centuries, materials curated by generations of Brown students, faculty, and other contributors have enriched and expanded Brown's East Asian collections in number and scope. Because so many people have been involved in the curation of a wide range of materials over a long span of time, they are contained in disparate collections, which may pose a challenge for researchers.

This guide is designed to help you find and access the Library’s East Asian materials, and to serve as a resource for education and research related to East Asia.

Key features of the guide:

  • Created by library experts, this guide offers a unified view of the Library’s rare East Asian collections and some suggested paths for finding materials within the collections, including some materials in languages other than English.
  • Resources available across the Library are aggregated here, including all the Library’s guides for using East Asian materials and suggestions for how to find both print and digital materials.
  • Research and funding opportunities at Brown that can support innovative academic projects related to East Asia.
  • Information about connecting with Library experts at Brown.
  • A showcase of student and scholar digital research projects that make use of some of the Library’s rare East Asian materials.
