RILM is international in scope with materials from 150+ countries and in more than 200 languages. There are approximately a half million records in RILM on traditional music, popular music, and classical music. Conference proceedings in go back to 1835.

The Virginia Baldwin Orwig Music Library houses Brown's general collections in music. Located in the Orwig Music Building, the music library has books, scores, sound recordings, and video recordings, as well as two reading rooms for general use.
There are also several special collections at the John Hay Library that include musical content. The Sheet Music Collection, with approximately 500,000 pieces of mostly American sheet music, is the most substantial of these collections, and the Phonorecords and Broadsides Collections may also be of interest to music scholars.
