The following databases contain articles and research papers, conference publications, textbooks, material and chemical properties and general reference materials. They are considered comprehensive and interdisciplinary and a good place to start a new research project:
Provides access to books, conference proceedings, and databases of major science and engineering publishers, current.
Current; Knovel aggregates the content (books and databases) of major science and engineering publishers. The resource is searched like a database for book titles, topics, and, more importantly, specific data within interactive tables and graphs.
Provides access to biomedical research, with in-depth coverage of pharmacology, pharmaceutical science, and clinical research, 1947-present.
A comprehensive discovery tool of chemical information. SciFinder-N is the new interface for SciFinder.
NOTE: This resource requires individual registration with your Brown email address. You must be on-campus or using the University's VPN when setting up your account. If you are first-time user, click HERE to register. If you've already registered, use the "SciFinder" link above.
Use of this resource is limited to current faculty, administrative staff, and registered students and their use is limited to academic research, teaching, and publication purposes only. Any commercial use is strictly prohibited.
A comprehensive scientific resource containing more than 700 interactive tables in more than 450 documents, current
Current edition of the print Handbook plus tables from older editions. Some tables are interactive and can be downloaded. Search by keyword in the text or substance/property search (by name, formula, CAS Registry No., molecular weight, and/or subject); back-of-the-book index is not interactive.

Inorganic crystal structures, including atomic coordinates, 1913-present.
1913-present; Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) consists of peer-reviewed data entries including their atomic coordinates. In the database are structures of elements and compounds with 2-5 different elements. Each year about 7000 new structures are added and previous content updated. Legacy crystal structure data for metallic and intermetallic compounds, with known atomic coordinates, from the U.S. National Institute of Standards & Technology have been incorporated since 2008. Structure types are comprehensive and searchable.
Provides bibliographic, chemical, and crystallographic records for organic molecules and metal-organic compounds, current
Current; the Cambridge Structural Database (WebCSD) consists of the bibliographic, chemical, and crystallographic (single crystal and powder diffraction) records for organic molecules and metal-organic compounds whose 3-D structures have been determined using x-diffraction and/or neutron diffraction. Almost all records have the three-dimensional coordinate data for at least non-hydrogen atoms. The crystal structure data comes from the open literature or direct deposits by researchers. Search by substructure, reduced cell, similarity, or text/numeric.
You can reliably search for many recent US government reports from labs like the National Renewable Energy Lab in BruKnow. Search the name of the report title and/or the author's name to locate the item in the catalog. The Library may also have some older technical reports in print at the Annex. Search by title, author, lab name, or report number to find and request the item.
There are many different repositories for technical reports produced by governments, international agencies, NGOs, and research institutions. If you can't find the technical report you are looking for in an online repository, you can request it using the Library interlibrary loan service.
